State and Local Sales Tax Turned Upside Down
The U.S. Supreme Court has issued its highly anticipated decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, overruling Quill’s physical presence sales tax nexus standard. This decision will have significant implications for almost all industries, but especially consumer products (retailers) and industrial products.
With a new sales tax nexus standard established, more states will require all businesses that sell within their borders to collect that state’s sales tax. About a dozen states have already addressed this issue.
However, Wayfair has created many more questions than answers. Adapting your business to the new sales and use tax landscape will take time, even though you may need to react quickly.
Gilmore Jasion Mahler is here to help you sort through the changes and impact on your business. We encourage you to reach out to any of our tax partners to discuss how you’re impacted.
A member firm of the RSM US Alliance, we would also like to share with you an RSM alert U.S. Supreme Court kills Quill physical presence on the ruling that we hope you find helpful.

Jennifer Henning Joins GJM Healthcare Team
We’re pleased to welcome a new member of the GJM Healthcare Specialist Group. CPA Jennifer Henning has joined the team as a Healthcare Manager. Here’s a chance to get to know her. Welcome, Jennifer!
Describe your role at GJM: I join the Healthcare Team with several years of experience in healthcare finance via hospitals and one of the largest for-profit healthcare systems in the U.S. I look forward to adding value to the already robust and established Healthcare Team. I enjoy working on regulatory reporting and keeping up to speed on the ever-changing healthcare legislation in the U.S. and State of Ohio. I hope to assist with all areas of healthcare, from Medicare and Medicaid Cost Reporting to financial analysis and accounting solutions. I’m so excited to join the team!
When did you start working at GJM? June 11, 2018
Why did you choose the accounting industry? I took an Accounting 101 course and fell in love with the objectivity of accounting. I continued pursuing it in my studies and realized it was much more complex than just “math.” I loved the fact that accounting exists in all industries; it really felt as if the sky was the limit once I had my CPA license. I eventually transitioned to Healthcare Finance and Administration, which was a logical career path having come from a family of nurses. I saw how rewarding caring for patients was for my mother and sister. I, too, wanted to feel I was doing something for the greater good of my community. I’ve loved every minute in the healthcare industry. It’s challenging, and there is always something to learn.
What do you like best about accounting? I’ve always loved the continued learning that comes with accounting, always a new FASB or GASB pronouncement to get up to speed on. And double bonus, being in healthcare I also get to learn about Medicare, Medicaid, and the constant updates to regulations that occur each year, there will never be a dull moment in healthcare! I hope that I can support GJM’s healthcare clients in a way that allows me to still feel I’m doing something for the greater good of my community.
Are you from the Toledo area originally? If not, where are you from? I’m originally from Oregon, OH. I’m a graduate of Clay High School. Go Eagles! (Fun fact, I used to coach cheerleading for Clay, so I’m known to cheer especially loud at a Friday night game.)
What do you like about living in Northwest Ohio? I love, love, love Lake Erie!!! We live on the lake in Oregon in the Bayshore area, right across from Eagles Landing Golf Course. I can see the lake from most rooms in our condo. Having lived elsewhere that was land locked, I can truly say Lake Erie was a huge part of why I looked forward to moving home. Now all we need is a boat!
Where did you go to college? I completed my Associates in Accounting at Owens here in Toledo, finished my Bachelor’s Degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, then wrapped up my MBA at The University of Toledo.
Anything you’d like to share about your past professional experience? I started off in public accounting as an auditor, and still often feel like an auditor at heart. I ask a lot of questions and enjoy digging into new things.
Do you have any pets, hobbies, family? No pets right now, too much going on with our active 1 year old daughter. I’m married to my childhood crush, Bradley. Together we have our daughter Charlotte Anne, we call her Charlie. I also have a 21 year old son, Jonathan, and a 4 year old stepson, Zachary, who lives in the Boston area. We travel there regularly to see him and enjoy venturing along the east coast to new places when we do.
How do you like to spend your free time? We love being outside in the summer, you’ll find us at the pool if it’s sunny and above 70 degrees. We love sporting events, attending Mud Hens and Walleye games are so much fun! I think our favorite is college football though– everyone in my family is an Ohio State fan. We go to at least one game a year. I also love watching a good snow storm from inside our condo with a fire going. The seasons are very beautiful here. Another reason I love NW Ohio.
Are you involved in any community organizations, do any volunteer work? I am on the Board of Directors and the Treasurer for Mom’s House of Toledo. If you don’t know much about Mom’s House, it's their mision to break the cycle of poverty by guiding at-risk single parents through the process of achieving educational goals. As a teen mother myself, I know how hard it can be to raise your child all while trying to grow up yourself. I have a special place in my heart for the moms at Mom’s House and love being able to give back to see them meet their goals.
What is something people may be surprised to find out about you? Probably the fact that I have a 21 year old and a 1 year old – quite the age gap! I wouldn’t change a thing though. Seeing my son melt at the site of my daughter is priceless. She has him wrapped around her finger already.
Anything else you’d like to add? Very excited to be here!
